Words of Wisdom from the SCBWI Summer Conference 2012 August 13, 2012 14:49 6 Comments
I just returned from the 41st Annual Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Summer Conference in Los Angeles. I came home feeling so inspired and empowered. One of the main messages of the conference that really resonated with me was to create in a way that speaks to the inner child within you. Here are a few other words of wisdom from the conference that I wanted to share with you to add positive and inspiring thoughts to your day!
"Play every day." Melissa Sweet, author and illustrator
"Give yourself permission to be imperfect — at least at first." Arthur Levine, Editorial Director Arthur A. Levine Books and a Vice President of Scholastic (also, the American editor for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series)
"There is a doorway that will change your life, if you just walk through it." Bryan Collier, author and illustrator
There are no shortcuts. Slow down. Focus on what you can control." Steven Malk, Literary agent with Writers House
For anyone out there thinking about writing or illustrating children's books and don't know where to start - my first piece of advice is to join SCBWI. Through SCBWI, immerse yourself in the craft, business, inspiration, and community - you won't regret it!
Here are a few photos from the conference:

Hi. I discovered your books You are my Cupcake, and We Belong Together one day when I was in Barnes and Noble. They were both just so adorable I had to buy them. My daughter loves for me to read them to her and I enjoy it myself. I really hope you will be making more adorable board books. Thanks for sharing your gift.

Thank you for your message Jenn – I truly appreciate it. It’s personal messages like yours that inspire me to keep creating. I’m so happy you and your daughter are enjoying the books. Yes, I will have 5 more board books out in the next 2 years and 1 picture book! Looking forward to spreading more love and smiles! xo
